Food of the Week - Avocado

Avocado -

It's a great winter food because it's insulating, and its creaminess can be comforting. Many people fear the avocado because of its high calorie and fat content (but, honestly, if an avocado is the WORST food you're eating, you're in pretty good shape!). These hefty foods do bring some hefty benefits. 1 cup contains 16 grams of dietary fiber, 5 grams of protein and 34% of the RDA for vitamin C. They're also a great anti-inflammatory food. These are great for OCCASIONAL consumption - especially during the winter months!

Avocados make a great addition to smoothies for creamy texture, minus the dairy bloat that yogurt brings. Their flavor is fairly neutral - easily disguised by any of the other smoothie ingredients.

Dice them for toppings on chili or baked, spicy-seasoned sweet potatoes, slice them and use on crackers instead of cheese, or mash them into a guacamole (see my simple recipe here). If you're feeling fancy, avocados make a great feature ingredient for a tasty bruschetta (recipe is here)!
